The 386 is not Dead!!!
Despite what many would have you belive, the 386 is still a viable, workhorse
cpu capible of performing a myriad of tasks just like it's younger, faster
breathern. It may not be the fastest machine on the block, but as the
tortise and the hare fable shows, speed isn't everything.
To that end, x386.net has been formed. Its goals, the construction of a
network of 386 class hardware offering contemporary services, dns, smtp,
http, shell access, and irc, with no reduction in feature set or performance.
To those who ask why, x386.net responds loudly with 'why not?' There is a
definate challange to pressing a decades old piece of technology into active
duty. Cramming a modern OS down a 386's throat is only the begining, as
you must also squeeze in services into the constrained memory footprint.
Many would rather purchace a large box and just slap something on it and be
done, but that seems such a waste when there is a vast array of older yet
still functional hardware available on the cheap if you're willing to put
some effort into making it work. The end result of doing on a 386 what many
claimed was the territory of Pentium Pros or higher end systems, is a
deep satisfaction knowing you're proving them all wrong.
Riding in the wake of the trailing edge of technology, you'll find x386.net
blazing the trail.
